Starting the conversation about wood products...

First and foremost I would recommend that you always look for ways to recycle wood products in situ or on site. There may even be ways to incorporate salvaged wood products in your project. I would recommend checking out the Architectural Salvage Directory for an architectural or materials salvage company in your area.

As a last resort, if new wood products are required, look for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. As of 2007, Americans used about 27% of the wood harvested world-wide. In many instances this wood was harvested by clear cutting virgin forests which leads to soil erosion and adversely impacts climate change. FSC-certified products support responsible forest management, ensures social responsibility in the communities it operates in, and provides planning methods to ensure continued economic viability of the forests being harvested.
